Celebrating 20 Years of Discovery: The Fort Peck Interpretive Center

2025 year marks the 20th anniversary of the Fort Peck Interpretive Center, a regional hub for history, nature, and community in Northeast Montana. Located in the charming town of Fort Peck, home to the world-famous Fort Peck Lake, the center offers an incredible window into the region's past, present, and future. Whether you’ve visited the center countless times or have yet to step inside, the 20th anniversary is the perfect occasion to celebrate all that this beloved landmark has to offer!

Interactive Exhibits for All Ages

The Fort Peck Interpretive Center first opened its doors in 2005, quickly becoming a cornerstone of education and exploration in the Missouri River Country. Operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the center highlights the region’s fascinating history, diverse wildlife, and the remarkable Fort Peck Dam—one of the largest hydraulic-fill dams in the world. A highlight of the center is its extensive collection of fossils and a life-sized replica of a Tyrannosaurus rex, lovingly referred to as "Peck's Rex," which continues to captivate visitors of all ages. Visitors can explore engaging exhibits about the Fort Peck Dam and Reservoir, as well as the native flora and fauna that call the area home. You’ll find displays showcasing the local habitat, from prairie landscapes of today to the dinosaur habitat of 66 million years ago. For younger visitors, the center offers hands-on activities, hides to hold, scavenger hunts, and a chance to explore the Kids' Discovery Room, making it a perfect destination for families.

Community and Events

Over the past 20 years, the Fort Peck Interpretive Center has become more than just a place to learn—it’s a gathering spot for the community. From educational programs and guided nature walks to special exhibits and community events, the Fort Peck Interpretive Center fosters connections between people and the natural world. The Annual Dinosaur days is a favorite for families, and events like the Annual Audubon Bird Festival brings nature lovers together in a celebration of the wide variety of migrating birds that call Northeast Montana home during their journeys. This anniversary year promises a lineup of celebrations, including tours, guest speakers, and special activities for all ages. It’s a time to reflect on the center’s impact and look forward to what the next 20 years will bring.

A Gateway to Adventure

Beyond the walls of the interpretive center, Fort Peck offers endless opportunities to connect with nature. The nearby Fort Peck Lake—Montana’s largest body of water, with more miles of shoreline than the California coast—is a haven for fishing, boating, and birdwatching. Visitors can also explore the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge, where miles of trails wind through breathtaking landscapes. The interpretive center serves as a gateway to these outdoor adventures, inspiring people to explore and appreciate the stunning natural beauty of northeast Montana.
