Things to do in Missouri River Country

Proof that Missouri River Country Has Some of the Best Fishing in Montana

If you are looking for exceptional fishing in Northeast Montana, you won’t have to look far. In addition to being home to some of the most untouched landscapes in the state, Missouri River Country is filled with productive fisheries, wide-open waters, and peaceful places to cast a line. Here, fishing isn’t just a hobby — it’s a passion and a way of life. With expansive reservoirs, uncrowded shorelines, and incredible variety, Northeast Montana offers anglers an experience that feels a long way from ordinary.

Species You'll Find Here

When it comes to trophy species, Northeast Montana delivers. Walleye are the undeniable stars of the show, drawing anglers from across the country alongside plenty of dedicated locals. Along with them, you’ll find northern pike, smallmouth bass, and lake trout.

One of the biggest surprises for many visitors is that chinook salmon thrive in Fort Peck Reservoir, making this one of the few places in Montana where anglers can target the species. Add in the prehistoric paddlefish — a true bucket-list catch — and it’s easy to see why Missouri River Country has become a sought-after fishing destination unlike anywhere else in the state.

Other popular species include sauger, channel catfish, crappie, and yellow perch, meaning there’s almost always something biting.

Places to Cast a Line

Fishing in Missouri River Country is legendary, and perhaps no place is better known than Fort Peck Lake, which boasts more than 1,500 miles of shoreline — even more than the California coast. One of the state’s largest and most productive fisheries, Fort Peck gives anglers endless room to explore quiet bays, hidden coves, and open water while chasing walleye, salmon, lake trout, and northern pike.

One particularly popular area of Fort Peck Lake is Hell Creek Recreation Area, which features camping, picnic areas, boat launches, and excellent access to some of the reservoir’s most scenic and lesser-traveled waters.

Nelson Reservoir is another favorite among walleye anglers. Smaller and more approachable than Fort Peck, it’s ideal for experienced fishermen, casual anglers, and families looking to spend time on the water.

In addition to lake fishing, Northeast Montana offers excellent opportunities along the many rivers, creeks, and streams that crisscross the region. Anglers flock to stretches of the Missouri River near Fort Peck and Glasgow, where walleye, sauger, catfish, and smallmouth bass are common catches — especially below Fort Peck Dam.

For a more remote experience, the Missouri River Breaks near Jordan provide scenic and peaceful fishing opportunities surrounded by dramatic landscapes and wide-open skies. Smaller waterways throughout the region also offer seasonal fishing opportunities in quiet settings far from the crowds.

Four Seasons of Angling

One of the best things about fishing in Northeast Montana is that it’s truly a four-season activity. No matter the time of year, there’s always an opportunity to get out on the water.

>Summer brings long daylight hours perfect for spending full days on the boat or shoreline chasing trophy catches. Spring and fall offer exciting fishing as changing temperatures trigger active feeding patterns, while winter transforms area lakes into destinations for ice fishing once the ice sets in.

No matter the season, fishing is always part of life in Missouri River Country.

Experience it For Yourself

Fishing in Missouri River Country is something you truly have to experience to believe. The proof isn’t just in the size of the fish — though there are plenty of photos to back that up. It’s found in the experience itself: early mornings watching the sun rise over still water, quiet days spent exploring pristine shorelines, and the feeling of being surrounded by expansive landscapes and endless skies.

And when the day is done, whether you’ve landed the catch of a lifetime or simply enjoyed time on the water, locals and visitors alike gather in the welcoming communities throughout the region to swap stories, share a meal, and start planning the next adventure.
